Show Notes

In 2009, SA became the first state in Australia to act on single-use plastics, banning light weight single-use plastic shopping bags.

On 1 March 2021, single-use plastic drinking straws, single-use plastic stirrers and single-use plastic cutlery were banned.

From 1 March 2022 this was extended to include expanded polystyrene cups, bowls, plates and clamshell containers and ‘Oxo-degradable plastic products’ were prohibited from production, manufacture, supply and sale in the state.

Hear from Professor Ian Overton, Chief Executive at Green Industries SA about South Australia’s single-use bans and the positive steps we're taking towards avoiding waste and reducing the harm caused to our wildlife, including marine life, through litter and ensuring the best environmental outcomes for our clean and green state.
