Show Notes

The State Library of South Australia’s main role is to collect and preserve the heritage of our state. This includes books and other written documents published in South Australia as well as photographic materials and artefacts that are part of archival collections. The oldest item in the collection is from 2500BC!

Exhibitions also play an important role in connecting the community to the state’s rich history and the library is mounting a major exhibition from November 2019 to April 2020 called Heroes of the skies. It commemorates the centenary of the epic 1919 England to Australia Air Race by two South Australian brothers, the Smiths.

On this episode of ‘Our State’, Librarians Mark Gilbert and Carolyn Spooner talk about the exhibition that will feature objects drawn from the library’s archival and published collections as well as rarely seen items from other cultural institutions.
